In October 2018, I returned to Bucovaca, a small village in central Bosnia. It had been 25 years since my last visit. From September 1993 to April 1994, I served there as a medical officer for the Dutch army during the UNPROFOR peacekeeping mission in the Bosnian Civil War. Going back gave me the chance to reflect on that time and see how the village had changed over the years. I documented my journey and experiences in a photo essay, which was later published in CheckPoint in 2019.
