/ The Crossing

In September 2017, I traveled to the southernmost part of Spain and Ceuta, a Spanish enclave situated in North Africa, next to Morocco. During my visit, I had the opportunity to photograph five men hailing from Ghana and Liberia, who were rescued from the coast of Tarifa, Spain by the Salvamento Maritimo and brought to Tarifa harbor. The treacherous trip across the Strait of Gibraltar from Morocco, undertaken in small inflatable boats, had become increasingly popular among African migrants that year. This was partly because the routes through Turkey-Greece and Libya-Italy were less accessible during that time. The photographs that I took during my trip are part of a larger project entitled 'The Myth of the Bridge.' The story of these men and their journey was published in December 2017 by the journalism platform, the Correspondent.
