/ The Crossing

In September 2017, I traveled to southern Spain and to Ceuta, a Spanish territory in North Africa near Morocco. While there, I photographed five men from Ghana and Liberia who had been rescued off the coast of Tarifa by Spain’s maritime rescue service and brought to the port.

That year, the dangerous crossing of the Strait of Gibraltar from Morocco—often in small inflatable boats—had become more common among African migrants. This was partly because other routes, such as Turkey to Greece and Libya to Italy, were harder to access at the time.

The photographs I took are part of a larger project called The Myth of the Bridge. The story of these men and their journey was published in December 2017 by the journalism platform the Correspondent.
